Here is a list of news and activities of Around The Block / Al Doblar La Esquina and friends for August 2005 and beyond.  Unless otherwise specified, admission is free to these events.

Around The Block cultivates urban community participation in arts and technologies, with a focus on the New York City area.  We welcome people of all backgrounds and levels of expertise to our activities, which include workgroups, performances, and exhibits.  ATB is a not-for-profit organization chartered in the State of New York, tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.

Membership in Around The Block is not required in order to participate in most ATB activities (and in particular those held at branches of the New York Public Library).  Nevertheless, we are grateful to the individuals and organizations that have contributed so generously to our cause

Announces FREE classes for young people

El Teatro Rodante Puertorriqueño, que durante más de 30 años ha ofrecido adiestramiento gratis a la juventud en varias disciplinas de las artes teatrales, hace un llamado a jóvenes entre las edades de 14 a 21 años.  Los interesados deberán ser altamente motivados y procedentes de hogares de escasos recursos económicos.  Los escogidos aportarán una registración de $100.00,  pero no pagarán por los cursos.  Entre las clases ofrecidas se encuentran Actuación, Canto, Baile, Técnica de Audiciones, Dicción, etc. Las clases son bilingües.

Interesados deberán llamar inmediatamente para obtener una entrevista de inscripción antes del inicio de clases.  Los teléfonos son 212-354-1293 de 1:00pm hasta las 5:00 pm o el 212-427-8835 de 6:00 pm hasta las 9:00 pm.  Las clases serán impartidas en la sede de la unidad localizada en el hermoso Centro Cultural Julia de Burgos en el 1680 de la Avenida Lexington entre las calles 105 y 106 en Manhattan.

El horario de las clases será de lunes a viernes, entre las horas de 5:00 pm a 9:30 pm así como los sábados, entre las 11:00 am a 2:00 pm.  Es necesario llamar para hacer una cita de entrevista al 212-354-1293 o al 212-427-8835.

Beginning Playwright Unit

There are still a few openings in the Beginning Playwright Unit of the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre.  Any writer determined to write a play is invited.  The Unit is now in its 28th year.  The Unit meets every Tuesday night for the next seven months, possibly longer.  There is a small registration/material fee.

This class is designed to discover new ways to build and develop a character. Through physical and mental exercises and improvisations, the actors learn techniques that will help to enhance their performance.

Monday Night Shorts screening series provides local filmmakers a showcase to share their work, garner audience reaction, network with film lovers, the film curious and colleagues for possible future collaborations.  The series promotes a diverse slate of selections from animation to docs to experimental shorts.

Peoples' Voice Café

The Peoples' Voice Café is an alternative coffeehouse offering quality entertainment.  We provide a space for the artistic expression of a wide variety of humanitarian issues and concerns.  The cafe is run as a not-for-profit collective, and is not affiliated with any political organization.  New participating members are always welcome.

Warfield Suite: Laura Warfield (guitar), Susan Gordon-Clark (autoharp) and Christine Anderson (percussion) make up Warfield Suite. This awesome threesome specializes in soaring three-part harmony and original music.

Professor Louie & Fast Eddie: Poet of the Streets: Call it poetry, call it rap--rapid-fire tongue with a mind to match.
Sarah Pirtle's best known and most covered songs include "My Roots Go Down," "Walls and Bridges," and "Two Hands Hold the Earth."

October 8:
Tony Bird: From southeast Africa this Malawi-born song man is a total original with a mesmerizing intensity and a unique vision, voice,guitar-style and persona.
Bruce Markow brings passion, playfulness and a well-honed craftsmanship to his eclectic song writing.

October 15: Eric Andersen holds a special place among singer/songwriter fans who recall the generation of artists who flourished in the early 60s' Greenwich Village scene.

October 22: Phil Ochs Song Night
Featuring: Magpie, Kim & Reggie Harris, Emma's Revolution, Greg Greenway, David Roth, and John Flynn

October 29: Joel Rafael Band has been performing together for the last eleven years.

Teatro Círculo

Teatro Círculo's offers a great variety of classical and contemporary productions through our New York City seasons.

Our upcoming Production "Un Quijote en Nueva York" by Luis Caballero is a co-production with Teatro IATI to celebrate the 400 anniversary of "Don Quijote de la Mancha" publication in 1605.
